The Thinkers: How Think Tanks Help to Polarize American Politics
The Thinkers: How Think Tanks Help to Polarize American Politics
November 3, 2024 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Ethical Humanist Society, 7574 Lincoln Ave, Skokie, IL 60077, USA
Increasingly, political parties have adopted not only different policies, but different sets of facts. E.J. Fagan, author of The Thinkers: The Rise of Partisan Think Tanks and the Polarization of American Politics, argues that partisan think tanks have helped create these alternate realities in their capacity as de facto formal party organizations. Fagan will explain how partisan think tanks—such as the Heritage Foundation and Center for American Progress—displaced nonpartisan experts to become the closest policy advisors to the Republican and Democratic Parties.
E.J. Fagan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He studies political parties, Congress, think tanks, agenda setting, lobbying, and punctuated equilibrium theory. In particular, he is interested in how legislatures process information and solve problems, and how party elites influence policy. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He is also a faculty associate with the Policy Agendas Project.

The Mourner’s Bestiary: Finding Hope in a Collapsing World
The Mourner’s Bestiary: Finding Hope in a Collapsing World
November 17, 2024 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Ethical Humanist Society, 7574 Lincoln Ave, Skokie, IL 60077, USA
Eiren Caffall’s memoir, The Mourner’s Bestiary, is a book about the complex connections between the human body and the natural world. It is a meditation on grief and survival told through the stories of animals in two collapsing marine ecosystems — the Gulf of Maine and the Long Island Sound — and the lives of a family facing a life-threatening illness. Eiren will discuss the lessons taken from her own story as a lens to find hope for us all in a collapsing world.
Eiren Caffall is a writer and musician. Her work on loss, oceans, and extinction has appeared in Guernica, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Literary Hub, Al Jazeera, The Rumpus, and the anthology Elementals: Volume IV. Fire, forthcoming in 2024 from The Center for Humans and Nature. She received a 2023 Whiting Award in Creative Nonfiction, a Social Justice News Nexus fellowship, and residencies at the Banff Centre, Millay Colony, Hedgebrook, and Ragdale. Her memoir, The Mourner’s Bestiary, is forthcoming from Row House Publishing in October 2024 and her novel All the Water in the World is forthcoming from St. Martin’s Press in January 2025.
