Fiction Circle Discussion Group

We'll meet in the auditorium immediately after the Sunday program to discuss Colson Whitehead’s "The Underground Railroad." Winner of the 2016 National Book Award, Whitehead’s novel uses an actual railroad (albeit underground and largely unknown) to explore black American history.

The movies for this month are “Norman,” the story of a persistent wheeler-dealer who falls in with an Israeli politician on the rise. When the politician is elected prime minister, Norman rises in esteem with the New York Jewish community, even though his social connections might only be a sham. And, “The Zookeeper’s Wife” which gives the account of the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo who helped save hundreds of people and animals during the German invasion.
Creative Writers Group

We meet after the Sunday morning program in the upstairs conference room on the third Sunday of every month. Newcomers are always welcome to share their short, original works. .
• Historical records of the society (1882-1980) are available to the public at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The Society donated its papers to the UIC library over 30 years ago. Items in the collection include minutes, correspondence, membership lists, speeches, photos, and newspaper clippings. • Enjoy the coffee and social hour after Sunday morning programs. For the summer, the coffee hour is 'Do-It-Yourself'. Feel free to bring snacks to share and make coffee or tea. But, please help to clean up afterwards.
• Our Tribute Fund is a way of honoring each other—like condolences on losing a loved one and congratulations on a birth, wedding, or personal achievement. Each tribute is printed in the newsletter. Forms are on the literature tables.
• Join one of our hard-working committees—like Ethical Action, Sunday Program, Fund Raising, Building, Membership, Publicity, Audio-Visual, Adult Education, and Caring. Are you interested? Call Sharon Appelquist at the office.
